Purpose

Provide a private, advertisement-free browser homepage for curated and categorised links without a subscription-dependent bookmark-syncing service.

Slinky is a self-hosted browser start page. It presents frequently used links in named categories whenever a browser opens its homepage, without news, advertising, trending stories, or other distractions. The same page can be used across computers and iOS devices.

The project began as a replacement for A Fine Start. Keeping that service’s bookmarks aligned between devices required a cumbersome nightly JSON export and import process, while Slinky’s bookmarks are maintained in one self-hosted location. A new installation can be populated through the browser or by importing an A Fine Start JSON export.

Slinky is written in Go and is intended to run as a systemd service on Debian. Its URL includes a secret access-path component instead of a login screen: requests outside that path return 404. This is a practical trade-off for a private page of bookmarks, but the path should be treated as a secret.

See the repository README for installation, build, and configuration details.
